The Calas Cafe is much more than just a place to try a great new treat. The enthusiasm of the owner is absolutely contagious. In Spanish ruled New Orleans it was possible for enslaved people to buy their freedom. One method they used was by making and selling calas. The calas looks similar to a beignet, but is made from rice. These treats are made on site, served hot and quite enjoyable. This is a great place to sample some historic New Orleans culture in the Treme.

This place is such a little hidden gem! The calas are delicious and Robert the owner is so nice and welcoming. They serve up a delicious dish while also giving a lesson on not only black history but black food history. Sitting down to have some calas before taking a stroll through Armstrong park was perfect! And the lemon curd and pistachio sauce that they serve with those is delicious!

The owner and staff burst with pride and enthusiasm for calas! They are ambassadors for this humble and most delicious food that women made and sold so that they could buy their freedom- manumission. Our day was better for our experience at the museum and Calas!

What a gem I loved the simple, yet cozy and well-decorated little café. You can't really miss it when you're in the vicinity, since the music, that's played outside during business hours should draw you to it magically A really nice place to sit also. Ordering Calas is a MUST! Those rice fritters are just amazing, crunchy, warm, always served freshly made (a few minutes patience are needed - but absolutely worth the wait ), and the spices used make them so much better than the well-known Beignets (and I really loved those). Last but not least: The service is really attentive, kind and friendly. Ask a little about the history of Calas - they are not only delicious, the owner is also happy to share some insights about the role they played in today's New Orleanians identity. Be sure to visit when in the city

You MUST visit Calas Cafe if you're in the city! Seriously better than any beignet I had during my entire time in NOLA, plus calas have such a rich cultural history. The owner is a wonderful person doing important cultural revitalization work and it's a joy to support this business. Their coffee is also incredible, I'm not usually a sweet coffee person but they use natural sweeteners (it's still a low sugar drink but doesn't have any artificial sweeteners or their accompanying nasty taste... just pure goodness) and it was seriously incredible. Must go - for the food, coffee, and to meet the incredible people behind this place!
